It’s 9 O’clock on a Friday night and here I am. I’ve got Erasure playing on the computer and have notes and papers scattered beside me on the couch. I’m in my comfy PJs wrapped in a blanket topped off with super fuzzy socks. My kids are snuggled up asleep in their beds and I’m hopped up on coffee, working.

Now I know some of you may be thinking, “Working on a Friday night? What?” But hey, partying on a Friday night is a thing of the past. And because I work for myself and I work online my hours are my own and I work whenever I feel like it. And by sitting here working instead of vegging out on the couch watching Scrubs reruns (OK, so those ARE actually on but, muted) I’m going to have a great week. A week where I’ll actually start out ahead.

This is one of the awesome things about working from home.

Earlier this month there was an article in the Huffington Post, 14 Reasons Why Being A Stay At Home Person Sucks. Since the article caught me on a stressful day, I related to it and posted it on Facebook. But I got to thinking, yes I related to it. I’d be a liar if I said I didn’t. Being a mom is hard. Being a working mom is hard. Being stay at home mom is hard. Put all of those together into one tired work at home mom and it gets even harder. And some days, it sucks.

But most days it’s kind of awesome.  And here are a few reasons why:

  1. I don’t have a boss. That’s what “working for myself” means. I don’t answer to anyone but myself. Granted, I have clients who hire me, and I do what they pay me to do. But it’s not the same thing as a boss lurking over your shoulder.
  2. I make my own schedule. I schedule meetings and phone calls when I want to. I can work from my couch, the coffee shop, or close my laptop and go for a walk.
  3. I get to take care of sick kids stress free. I remember what it was like to get a call from my daycare provider that my son was sick. I’d have to tell my boss and coworkers that I needed to leave and then I’d have to finish what I was working on, clean out my in-box, while sitting on hold with the doctor. The whole time my sick child would be waiting for me at daycare. Now? I can have my sick kids in my arms in less than 6 minutes from the time the school calls me to tell me their sick. I can snuggle, watch TV or take them to the doctor. All without worrying about leaving work.
  4. I don’t miss a thing. Class parties, assemblies, field trips, science lab, and every other little thing at school. I’m there for all of it. And that’s pretty darn cool.
  5. I can take a vacation without taking time off work. I can pretty much work from anywhere that I can plug in my laptop and get Wi-Fi. Anywhere.
  6. I’m in charge of the thermostat. In the summer or winter I never have to bicker with other people in the office about turning the heat or air up or down.
  7. I’m also in charge of the music. I pick the station. I pick the volume. Try and pull that one off in the office…
  8. Household chores can be included in my workday. So this could actually be something that’s listed in the “Reason Why it sucks” list, but in the vain of staying awesome, I am adding it here. With decent time-management, loads of coffee, and the occasional Friday night work session I can get some housework done during my workweek. Yay me.
  9. No commuting. Unless of course you count walking to and from school to pick up the kids. Whether it’s hot or humid out or storming and raining, I’m not stuck driving in it. Ever. Also, see #6.
  10. I’m healthier. Let’s face it when you’re working in an office you can be chained to your desk a good part of the day. When you’re working from home you get a lot more action and are able to take time to walk around the block or do short workout right there at home. Plus working from home means less dining out. Not to mention making and eating healthier foods is always easier from home.
  11. The dress code isn’t very strict. I can dress up or show up in my PJs. Either way the only one judging me is the cat. And who is she to judge fashion?
  12. Less stress. Don’t get me wrong, working from home can be stressful in so many ways I couldn’t even begin to list them. But here at home, it’s a different kind of stress. It’s my stress. I control it, I decide how I want to deal with it, and how to fix it. And on my worst days I decide when to say “Screw It” and lie down on the couch and read for 30 minutes.

So yea, nothing in life is easy. And being a work at home parent creates a whole unique set of challenges. But I wouldn’t change it for the world. Maybe for a bigger paycheck… but hey it’s hard to find one of those in an office these days too.

I love working from home, but it was a lot easier before I had my son.

First of all I would like to thank you for the great and informative entry. It was a top quality content. Actually I would like to write like this as well – taking time and real energy to bring about an excellent post… however what can I say… I procrastinate an awful lot and by no means appear to get things completed.

When your habits actually start costing money, it can be amazing how you can change them…or at least get nudged in the right direction! I've been working from home for 13 years and have had to redirect myself in a number of ways!

You are right on all counts. However, the issue for me is that if I'm not working, I'm not bringing in the much needed income. Therefore, the urge to work all the time can be hard to resist. The days I force myself to close my laptop and take a walk, I am better for it. But when i say force myself, I mean it. It's hard!

Maybe I need to make a list like this because the idea of taking a FT office job scares me more!

I worked from home for about 2 years. I was terrible at it. I didn't feel that drawn to the work and would procrastinate and then feel the dread of always having it hanging over my head. I love the idea of it, if I loved the work or were more disciplined…

I understand completely. Isn't it hard to have the discipline, though? Sometimes you just don't want to and have to force yourself to complete something. Also, there are times that others feel that since you ARE at home then you must be available ALL the time…car pools, baking, etc are wonderful and I enjoy doing them but there actually are times I am unavailable. I like the thermostat point. Never thought of that one.

Before I had kids I thought working from home would be heaven. Today- no way. I need a place to give myself some space. Once I reenter the work force- probably 4-5 years from now, I can't wait to do so- away from home!

@kymnasium February 6, 2012 at 10:44 pm

all wonderful reasons! would love to do this soon.

I am currently working from home in a contact center job, which is a very nice alternative to beaing in some huge office with everyone chattering non-stop and your supervisor constantly looking over your shoulder. Just my desk, a computer with the company software installed and a headset. Sure, it demands more self-discipline to fulfill the quotas, but then the advantages are obvious. And after you are done, you just switch off your computer and go take a nice hot bath.

I was fortunate to have a job working from home for about a year. It was great. Unfortunately the company went out of business and I was forced to get a job outside the home. Well, it was good while it lasted.

Sammi February 7, 2012 at 5:44 pm

It is worth it to figure out a way to work from home – there are so many benefits – I wish I could figure it out!

Jodi February 9, 2012 at 12:26 pm

I would love to work from home!

Keonna February 10, 2012 at 9:32 am

Working from home is great, but at the same time you have to be disciplined because its easy to become distracted. With you being your own boss, there's no one else around to tell you to get back to work….you have to do that for yourself.

Renee February 10, 2012 at 6:27 pm

Working from home is such a blessing! :)

Sara Wood February 11, 2012 at 12:02 pm

I am currently starting a work at home business and I love it!

I want to be a stay at home mom when I have children so thank you for writing this post. I am not working at the moment, just working on building up my blog and this was a nice, well written post to need, it even made me laugh at some parts :)

Selene Montgomery February 12, 2012 at 7:07 am

I worked as a virtual call center agent and it was great…..no traffic or weather to worry about!

Harriett Daniel February 12, 2012 at 7:23 am

I would love to be able to do this, but we must be disciplined!

Trish February 12, 2012 at 5:11 pm

I work at home and LOVE it. I love the flexibility of my daily schedule.

Hi Meghan,

Thank you so much for this awesome list of reasons why it's great to work from home. While my 2 sons are grown now, I can only imagine how awesome that would be to work from home while my kids were young. I didn't have that opportunity, since I started my biz after they were grown.

But your list of reasons for working at home are great reasons for anyone who wants to work from home.

Again, thanks for sharing them .

Cindy

I too am a stay at home mom. I am a Tastefully Simple Consultant so I get to do my parties whenever I want to while working around my son's soccer games. Best part of it I can give myself a bigger check just by doing an extra party a month. When I grow my team that means a Bonus Check from HQ. As far as being disciplined it's all about forming a habit as soon as you have it formed it's just like brushing your teeth you do it without thinking.

Krystal February 20, 2012 at 5:21 pm

I have two year old twins, and working from home allows me to work. Daycare would have taken my whole paycheck…. and I have an awesome boss that lets me work from home. It is hard….but, I do get to be with my girls… and they only grow up once. Sometimes I wish I did work away from home…b/c working from home means you don't really ever get a break. But, I love that I'm in control of when I work…and if one (or both) of my girls need snuggle time, I can do that!
