The idea of a diet pill seems fishy to me. (In fact, any weight loss suggestion that isn’t “exercise regularly” and “eat healthy” seems fishy to me.) But now, the Food and Drug Administration thinks a weight loss pill called lorcaserin is fishy too.
The FDA is questioning both the effectiveness and safety of the pill. After a year, people who took the pill lost an average weight of 5.8 lbs. as opposed to the 2.5 lbs. lost by people who were taking a dummy pill. Obviously, not a huge difference. But there are worries that the drug leads to an increased risk of heart valve disease.
There’s a reason that no weight loss drug has ever been produced. It’s because no pharmaceutical company can engineer one that doesn’t lead to a number of cardiovascular problems.
Currently, the FDA is reviewing two new weight loss drugs. But don’t hold your breathe. (But then again, can we trust the FDA?)
