Whatroulette?

What is Chatroulette? It’s a website where users are randomly matched up with other people from around the world for a video chat. It’s kind of like a Skype free-for-all that’s completely bizarre, uncomfortable, NSFW, and absolutely worth trying out if you’re brave enough. Chatroulette is like the Wild West of the web, and it’s something parents should definitely be informed about.

This cute video summarizes the experience pretty well, with some great breakdowns of how most users respond. For example, the guy who made this video got skipped by 95%, but when a pretty a girl was doing it, 95% of people were willing to talk to her. Not surprising, but totally interesting!

valentines_day_safetyValentine’s Day is, without a doubt, one of the most dangerous holidays of the year. Common risks include chocolate-allergy related complications, emotional trauma, and broken hearts. By following these common sense safety tips, you can ensure your Valentine’s Day goes smoothly. bs_asha_dornfestAsha Dornfest is the founder of Parent Hacks, a community-guided site full of everyday know-how, crowdsourced from the creativity of its readers. Parent Hacks covers everything from removing gum from your kid’s hair (olive oil) to getting helium balloons down from a high ceiling (vacuum cleaner) curing hiccups (peanut butter).

Asha spoke with us about how she started the site, what other blogs she reads, and what book she’d bring if she were stuck on a desert island.

What was the inspiration for Parent Hacks?

The inspiration (or should I say anti-inspiration?) was the bewilderment I felt after my first child was born. I read all the books but was as confused as ever when he didn’t “fit” the descriptions and the strategies. I slowly realized that a combination of advice from experienced parents plus my own intuition was generally more helpful than anything ever written by an expert.

I’ve never actually seen an episode of Jersey Shore, but I get the impression that watching little kids reenact the show is about as close as I’m going to get.

BalloonMy gut instinct would be to try and shoot it down with a BB gun. Here’s a less stupid idea from the always insightful Parent Hacks:

I had two balloons stuck in my two-story entryway, while two little boys sobbed for them to come down NOW. Although they had ribbons tied to them, I still couldn’t reach the ends, even with my six-foot ladder. I really didn’t want to bring in my taller ladder, so I took a moment to think. I wound up taking my canister vacuum cleaner up the ladder with me, and sucked up the ends of the ribbon. Those balloons were down in seconds!

The job market isn’t looking good for anyone, but it’s especially bad for teenagers, regardless of geography and class. The numbers are surprising. In 2000, 7.3 million teens were working; in early 2008, only 1.5 million were collecting paychecks.

So just before the new year, Maggeh (aka the design-savvy Mighty Girl) posted her list of “100 Skills Everyone Should Master.” Those are a lot of skills. Is it just me or is “keep a plant alive” the hardest thing on this list? You always have to water them and stuff. It’s hard. Anyway, here’s the list:

  1. Set goals
  2. Keep a plant alive
  3. Care for a baby
  4. CPR
  5. Feel confident naked
  6. Interview for a job
  7. Bake a birthday cake
  8. Use a fire extinguisher
  9. Use a compass
  10. Express condolences

Find out what the other 90 skills are at Mighty Girl!
