Boxing can provide both a great physical workout and good positive behavioral learning for your kids. As a parent, you need to be careful about providing the right kind of safety gear and arranging for the correct method of instruction and alert supervision by certified coaches and instructors. All this will help considerably to lessen much of the potential injury hazards associated with the sport.
Preparations
One of the most crucial points you need to keep in mind for your kids to have a safe sports experience, is to be involved in the process and be mentally prepared to provide encouragement and assistance to your child during training and practice.
Make yourself conversant with the all rules of the sport. In this way you can advise your kid to stick to those. Following the regulations of boxing, like any other sport, can play a huge role in reducing accidents and greatly improve safety standards.
Both as a method of instilling self discipline and ensuring safety, insist that your kids engage in warming up exercises and stretching before a match or any boxing training. Similarly make sure they stretch and cool down afterwards. By making this a habit, your kids will be less prone to injuries as their bodies will be well prepared for the ensuing action.
Your kids hands are the most important when it comes to boxing. They are the main instruments of the sport, and also the most prone to get injured. Hand and wrist injuries are painful and sometimes, the most difficult to heal. So, both you and the instructor should make it a point to keep the kids’ hands wrapped at all times. Make sure your kids’ gloves are of the right size for them and fit properly and firmly.
Make sure your kids wear all the protective gear needed for the sport. Shop for regulated Olympic-fashion head gear to keep your children’s heads safe from hard hits that might lead to concussions. Proper mouth guard for protecting the mouth and teeth, abdomen guards for protecting the groin region and right shoes with advanced gripping soles should be mandatory. Make sure your little girl wears some chest protection gear as well during training and matches.
While you are watching your children in the boxing arena, keep water or juices or vitamin or glucose fortified drinks handy. Insist on their sipping on these drinks to stay hydrated before and after the sport session. Also, keep handy basic first aid in case of an injury. If you children have any special conditions, keep necessary medication at hand as well.
Keeping Track
Keep a tab on the time your children are spending in the workouts. Make sure they do not over exert themselves. This strains the body, leading to increase in chances of injury. Depending on your child’s age, physical condition and boxing expertise according to the trainer, make sure the time spent in boxing is just right.
Most importantly, make sure your children are learning the sport at an established well-known facility where coaches put safety first. Such a facility will also have, at all times, at least one adult who knows CPR in case of an emergency. In any case, keep your phone handy to call 911 in case you need to.
