“When people co-parent, they rise above the issues that were reasons they divorced in order to make sure their children’s needs are met,” said Deesha Philyaw, who co-parents with her former husband Michael Thomas.
I think it’s incredible, and impressive, that divorcees can co-parent, and if it’s feasible, I think it’s a great way to give kids consistency. That said, I doubt that most divided marriages could sustain a co-parenting relationship. It just might be too hard to be friends, let alone equal parents.

I believe in it in the broader sense. I think when it comes down to practical application it proves very challenging for the majority of divorced parents. A large part of the divorce process seems to come down to vying for control, on some level. I think the resentments that can and often do build up during that process have shown themselves to play out in parenting after the divorce dust has settled.
I absolutly believe in co-parenting but I think it's a difficult thing to do for the two parties involved. The emotional scars that ensue after a divorce so often prevent what is best for the children. Oprah did a show on this with Will and Jada Smith who coparent with Will's oldest son. Both women (current and ex-wife) said it took some years for it to work out but now it's a great arrangement.
Co parenting is no Disneyland. Depsite any divorced couples good natured lets pretend relationship in front of the kids, the best thing to do is not get divorced and make your marriage work no matter the obstacles. But there has to be two willing parties for that to happen. Why is it we marry for better or for worse, but we never stay when things get worse?
