allergiesSpring might mean the return of the sun and nice weather, but for those with allergies, it means a lot of coughing and sneezing. How do you and your kids get rid of allergies? Or at least stave them off? The Times suggests taking three steps: finding the right doctor, eliminating the source, and immunotherapy.

Mild allergies can be treated without much testing, and getting the right prescription and over-the-counter medication can make a world of difference. But for children with worse allergies, parents should take them to to an allergist, who can pinpoint exactly what your child is allergic to with a skin test. Many times, pets are to blame for allergies. It doesn’t mean you need to get rid of your cat or dog, but keeping them away from carpeted rooms, sleeping areas, and upholstered furniture. Dust mites are another common issue, so drapes, upholstered furniture, and carpeting from the bedroom should be removed.

A new study found that immunotherapy (allergy shots) can eliminate symptoms after 18 months of treatment. It’s costly (about $1,000 for the first year, $350 for the following) but could save you money in the long run.
