Mountain biking is one of the more fun outdoor activities that a family can do because it involves strenuous physical riding activity combined with camaraderie. Also, there are many scenic mountain areas where mountain biking can be done. This adds to the excitement of mountain biking as well. However, despite the fun involved, mountain biking can be dangerous if riders do not have awareness of a few basic rules. The following paragraphs are a discussion of a few mountain biking safety tips.

Maintaining Control of Speed

Riding at a slower speed and trying to maintain riding control can help you prevent biking accidents. For instance, if you lose control at a slower speed, you are not likely to fall or crash as hard as you would at a higher speed. Less impact on the crash means survival and survival is important. There is nothing wrong with taking things a little slower particularly if you are a child or an adult rider who is riding with children.

Appropriate Gear and Equipment

Always have appropriate gear and equipment for the particular terrain that you will be riding on. For example, always wear a helmet because you never know when you might get thrown forward off of your bike accidentally. Also, bikes vary in terms of the type of terrain that they are best for. Some types of mountain terrain are very rocky and so that would require a bike that can handle that. Some types of mountain terrain are comprised of mainly soft dirt and for those cases you would need a bike that can handle dirt.

No Fancy Stunts

Do not attempt to do any kind of stunts while participating in mountain biking. For example, do not try to ride around corners not knowing what is around the corner. Do not attempt to ride in such a way that the front part of the bike is lifted off of the ground while you are riding. Do not try to show off because if you try to show off, you will not be paying sufficient attention to your bike and your surroundings and that could put you at risk for having a biking accident.

Ride Only on Marked Open Trails

Riding on clearly marked open trails is a smart choice because marked trails have been evaluated and determined to be safe for riders. It is true that it is sometimes tempting to think about riding off on an unmarked trail to see if you can meet the riding demands of the trail. However, it is best to stay with open trails that have already been determined to be safe riding trails.
