school_start_laterAs an experiment, a high school in North Tyneside, England is letting its students start the school day later to see if it has an effect on absenteeism. Just by pushing the start of the school day back one hour, they’re already seeing an 8% drop in general absence and a 27% reduction in persistent absenteeism.

It’s too early to see the academic effects of the later start time, but the school is “hopeful” of standardized test results from January and February. According to the school’s head teacher Paul Kelley, “We can help them learn better. We can help them be less stressed by simply changing the time of the school day.”

Personally, I’d like to see more schools — and some in America — try this out. There’s no reason kids should have to get up so early, and if it helps reduce absenteeism even a little bit, I can’t see any reason not to try the shift.

What do you think? Are there downsides to starting the school day later?

I was curious if you ever considered changing the structure of your site? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or two pictures. Maybe you could space it out better?

What I wouldnt give to have a debate with you about this. You just say so many things that arrive from nowhere that Im pretty certain Id have a fair shot. Your blog is fantastic visually, I mean people wont be bored. But others who can see past the videos and the layout wont be so impressed together with your generic understanding of this subject.

Hey! Do you know if they make any plugins to help with Search Engine Optimization? I’m trying to get my blog to rank for some targeted keywords but I’m not seeing very good success. If you know of any please share. Many thanks!

I am not saying any of your opinions are wrong but kids DONT need disipline. They may feel parents are hard enough on them, but that is a good reason

school should not start later because of all the after school activites involved, homework, sports, or music one needs to finish after school. in addition, it only results into kids having a less 1 hour of sleep due to the setback in time.

If you think schools should start later, and you live in the USA, please join our effort to limit the hour at which schools can start (this isn't tell local schools when to start, just setting a limit on the time schools can begin so that schools can't keep starting earlier & earlier for "efficiency" while damaging learning, health, & safety. We need 5000 signatures by Nov. 2, 2011 for a White House response, and any American 13 years or older can sign: http://wh.gov/2qJ

This is a petition format set up by WhiteHouse.gov as a way to let any American bring issues to the attention of the White House–so it's a rare chance to make progress on an issue that local school systems haven't been able to resolve due to economic & other logistical constraints. Signing is a bit complicated in that you first have to register, wait for a confirmation by email, and then log in again on the link they send you to sign, but it's a couple of minutes well spent when you consider the good you can do.
