New research reveals that harsh parenting—characterized by firm arm grabbing, yelling, and repeatedly punishing children—may have long-term mental health issues, like social phobia, separation anxiety, and panic attacks.
“We know that common practices such as spanking or excessive punishment do not instill a strong discipline. Quite the opposite, they have a lasting psychological impact on children,” says Françoise Maheu, a professor at the Université de Montréal’s department of psychiatry and lead investigator of the study.
The study looked at children ages 12 to 17, separated them by the types of parenting styles with which they were raised, and compared brain scans to correlate brain activity fear and anxiety. The link, obviously, was not definite, but strong.
There’s been a backlash against spanking as a method of discipline, and it looks like scientists are discovering that other less physical but authoritarian parenting styles also have a negative impact on children.

How could it not? Children are people too….just smaller than us. That just means by virtue of size we have the upper hand. We have to use it intelligently and respectfully.

I think this is pretty obvious. Maybe studies like this will get though to parents. With everything, moderation is key. You need to be somewhere in the middle ground even w / parenting.
I believe that the most important factor in disciplining kids is consistency. If the same rules apply to everyone, parents included, things are fine. Anxiety is a fear of the future, the result of not being able to predict what's coming and feeling it may be dangerous. Therefore, when the rules and the responses to breaking them are clear, it matters little what they are (within reason).
