Swimming makes an amazing active pastime for the whole family. While your kids will have a lot of fun in the water, you as a parent need to be careful about keeping them safe at the pool.

The easiest way to keep an eye on your young pool enthusiasts is to swim with them. Take your swimming gear to the pool and hop in with them. If you are an avid swimmer and are about to do your usual laps, make sure while you are swimming, there are lifeguards on the ground. As accidents can happen in the blink of an eye, make sure to check on the whereabouts of your kids every once in a while.
The first thing your kids need to do in the pool is to learn to swim. While you, as a good swimmer, can be a good teacher, you also have the option of enrolling your kids in a swim program with a professional trainer. Apart from the process of swimming, such trainings will usually teach your children the best way to react in case of an emergency in the water and make them aware of water safety measures.

Drill it into your kids’ heads that they are not to attempt to dive into the pool at the shallow water end at any time. Any kind of diving activity is usually never advised in water shallower than 9 feet. This is because it can lead to serious injuries which could even be fatal. Make certain that your kids know the depth of the pool, how deep it is at which end.

If you have your own pool at home, open the gates to the pool only when you and your kids plan to take a swim. Small children might wander into the pool area and fall into the water accidentally while you are not around. So keep the gates locked at all other times. You could try installing alarm systems on windows and doors leading to the pool, out of your kids’ reach. Remove all your kids’ toys from the pool area so they are not drawn to the water. If you ever let them play in and around the water, make sure an adult is nearby to keep an eye on them. Keep life saving jackets, arm floaters, and blow up rings, noodles near the pool for use in case of an emergency. It is important that at least one adult watching the kids knows CPR. Make it a point to keep a charged cordless telephone near the pool at all times, so you can call 911 if you need to.

When you go shopping for a bathing suit, make sure you buy a bright colored one so it is easier to spot your kids in water. Also, if you are planning on visiting a popular, crowded beach, try to make your children wear something with an unusual design, so it is easier to locate them among the others.
