How do you give parenting advice to strangers? “Don’t,” says Sierra at Babble. “…don’t offer advice. If you must intervene, offer help.”

Public parenting is a controversial issue with lots of arguments on both sides, and it’s easy to see why. Nobody wants to be told what to do or how to act, even if it comes from a good place.

Lisa Belkin at Motherlode understands the dilemma best. While it’s easy to be offended by public parenting, it’s just as hard not to be the perpetrator. “Every time I hear a story of a public-parenting busybody I wonder the same thing. What were they thinking? Then I cringe a little. Because, I confess, I have been guilty of being that busybody.”

No one said parenting was easy, but is the cover story of the most recent issue of New York Magazine, which features a cover story entitled “Why Parents Hate Parenting”, is causing a bit of stir among parenting bloggers. It’s a long piece, but it essentially bases its argument from a happiness study that says adults without children are generally happier than those with.

Naturally, this is making a lot of parents upset. Or defensive?

But maybe it’s just the headline that people are reading, and not the rest of the article.

This year, even before the game has started, Super Bowl commercials are sparking an uproar over which ads CBS—the network airing the game—will run and which ads it won’t. The network’s choices have led to claims of political bias and censorship, and generally a whole lot of hullabaloo and name calling.
