It doesn’t take a long drive to get out of San Francisco for a hike. In fact, you can take advantage of the Bay Area’s lovely public transportation system, which will cut costs both financial and environmental (go green or go home, right?). McHugh suggests familiar but essential trip planing services, like Transit and Trails, Google Maps, and 511.org, and has specific transit routes you can take to Mission Peak, Mt. Tamalpais, the Los Gatos Creek Trail, and Diablo Foothills Regional Park.
