2. Medications

Extremely dangerous for kids who mistake them as candy. Never leave them within reach, make sure caps our childproof, and in the case of an emergency, you’ll want to call the poison control center.

After the massive recall of Ikea blinds last week, the Consumer Product Safety Commission is calling on manufacturers to develop a safer standard for window blinds and shades. If producers don’t step up to the challenge — and quickly — the government will instead establish its own standards.

Ikea is voluntarily recalling 3.4 million blinds after an 18-month-old baby was almost strangled by the control cord. The blinds have been sold at Ikeas in the U.S. and Canada since 1998.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has advised consumers to stop using the blinds immediately. Ikea recalled more than 1.3 million blinds last year after a baby girl died in Connecticut.

From the Montreal Gazette.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and GE voluntarily recalled 181,000 front-load washers for fears that they pose a fire hazard. According to the press release, “A wire can break in the machine and make contact with a metal part on the washtub while the machine is operating, posing fire and shock hazards to consumers.” (Fire hazards seem to be a theme in the world of product recalls this week.)

Consumers with affected GE washers are advised to stop using them immediately and unplug them from their electrical outlet. They can contact GE for a free repair by calling the company at 888-345-4124 or visiting the recall website.
