When de-icing your driveway or walkway, you have a lot of options. But when you’re choosing a de-icing agent, keep in mind the safety of your pets, plants, and neighbors.
For example, salts can be toxic to living things, when applied in excess. Rock salt, the least expensive salt, is dangerous for for plants if you use more than four pounds per 100 square feet. Muriate of potash, on the other hand, won’t hurt plants, but works slower at melting ice than rock salt. The article goes on, describing every possible thing you could use as a de-icer.
