Tragic Death of Child Inspires Unbelievable Donations

***UPDATE – 8/8/11*** WOW!!! I really cannot believe it! $857,585 now, less than two weeks later! Incredible. Inspiring. Uplifting. Rachel, you are an inspiration. Your life, though short, has enriched us all.

A young girl with a dream to inspire others decided that this year, for her 9th birthday, instead of gifts she wanted something most 8 year olds never ask for: no presents. Instead, she wanted her friends and family to donate to charity:water on her behalf.

Chairty:water is a non-profit organization that brings a sustainable source of clean and safe drinking water to developing nations. Rachel’s goal was $300, enough to bring 15 people clean water. By her birthday she was about $80 short of her goal.

This past Saturday, Rachel’s life was lost due to a highway accident involving a dozen other vehicles. Since then, inspired individuals, like us here at the Life360 office, have donated to her dream. Today, Rachel’s dream has flown above the clouds, bringing in over $230,000. This little girl’s desire to help others will now bring more than 11,500 people clean and safe water. (update: Just in the time since Ive written this–15 minutes maybe–its gone up to $240,000. WOW!)

This story has moved many to tears and many more to donate. I wanted to share the story with you as a reminder of big a change such a small person can bring. Believe in yourself and believe in your dreams, because you never know what life will bring you.

If you feel inspired, donate just $9 in honor of Rachel’s ninth birthday on her charity:water page

Donations are already 230,000 and counting! Leave a comment on this post to inspire others to donate.

In Rachel’s words:

On June 12th 2011, I’m turning 9. I found out that millions of people don’t live to see their 5th birthday. And why? Because they didn’t have access to clean, safe water so I’m celebrating my birthday like never before. I’m asking from everyone I know to donate to my campaign instead of gifts for my birthday. Every penny of the money raised will go directly to fund freshwater projects in developing nations. Even better, every dollar is “proved” when the projects are complete, and photos and GPS coordinates are posted using Google Earth. My goal is to raise $300 by my birthday, June 12, 2011. Please consider helping me.

Thank you so much!!!
