5 Reasons to be Happy About the Kids Going Back to School

Chances are if someone were to take a look at the calendar hanging in your kitchen, they would see a day circled with a big felt marker that is only a few weeks away. That day, of course, would be the first day of school.

If you’re like me, you may be feeling slightly conflicted about that day looming on the calendar. For many parents, the beginning of the school year represents both positives and negatives. In fact, there are so many pros and cons that I can’t even decide for myself if I’m happy or bummed that the school year is coming.

So I decided to write a two-part post on both. The good and the bad of starting a new school year. This is part one where I’ll look at the things I’m looking forward to about the kids going back to school.

Be sure to add the things you’re looking forward about school starting at the bottom of the post.

1. Free Time

Though I suppose this can vary from parent to parent depending on whether they work out of the home, in the home, or as volunteers at school and run a household. For me, a mom who works from home, I can certainly appreciate the return of a quiet workday with no distractions.

2. No More Bickering

I don’t know about you, but now that we are in the last half of summer vacation the bickering in my house has increased dramatically. I can’t say I’ll complain when both kids get sent to their separate corners… er… I mean classrooms.

3. Chores

Honestly since summer started it seems that chores have slid quite far down the priority list. Keeping the kids busy, skipping off to the pool on lazy, hot days have all played a part in allowing the housework to pile up. Not that I’m a huge fan of housework (in fact I’m not really a fan at all), but even I have to admit it will be nice to get back into the normal routine.

4. Talking to Grown Ups

With the exception of the occasional play date or get together with friends, there has not been a whole lot of grown up conversation for me the last couple of months. I really look forward to reconnecting with my other mom friends at my kids’ school and enjoying some grown up conversation on a daily basis again.

5. School Activities

I’m one of those very weird moms who actually look forward to a lot of school activities. I enjoy volunteering (, the fall carnival, field trips to the pumpkin patch, assemblies, Halloween parades, and all of it. I enjoy spending those moments with my kids and I look forward to a whole new year full of those moments.

I love that photograph! Those are the cutest colored pencils. The only drawback to kids going back to school is increased traffic in the mornings, now!

  2. Amber Smith

I agree with you about the school activities. I love getting involved and helping out where I can, plus I get to spend more time with my little girl. I haven't missed the alarm clock at all though 🙁

  3. Timbo

You're right on each of these, and at the same time, I imagine it can be slightly sad in some ways because one may begin to miss their kids 🙂 Or maybe that's just me 😛

  4. Susan Smith

I always have mixed feelings about my children going back to school. I enjoy spending the Summer with them and the relaxed pace.

  5. Michelle Simons

I have no kids but I bet a lot of mothers need school to catch a break.

  6. patricia

Children get bored after being home about a month so going back to school is always welcome.

  7. mar

It's more entertaining for them while at school. Plus, they are learning. Win/win.

  8. Fritter

I was a teacher up until I had my son- and there' s just something about this time of year! My guy is too small for school just yet but I know I am going to be one of those moms skipping and dancing around the store getting their supplies and clothes for the big day/year. I loved it as a kid and hope I can instill the same amount of fun into my children's first days of school too.

  9. Helen

I'm excited because my youngest daughter graduated high school and I'm going back to college to finish after a twenty year break. Wish me luck!!

  10. Fritter

Hey, that's really cool for Helen. I think that's a great idea actually. I would love to get back to school myself at a local small college and take classes just for fun. Things that I find fascinating (medieval times, etc) I wish I took classes for in school

  11. Carol J StJohn

I love that the children will be going back to school..they get to meet old friends teachers and a whole new world of exploration…

  12. Suzanne K

I'm excited about school starting! My daughter will be productively busy and learning and (hopefully) doing very well in school! One more step/year closer to graduation! I like the structure that daily school brings to our lives.

  13. Suzy

School was always a negative place for me. I was one of the shy kids that really hated to be called on for answers. Especially in math class! Math is definitely not my subject. I remember, when the day was coming closer and closer for school to start again I'd always get anxious about it. Of course it's good for kids to go back to school again so that they can sit in class and learn. It's nostalgic to think of those long hot summer vacation days running in sprinklers and having fun. I think that's a part of those childhood memories you just want to hold onto. In high school I met the love of my life in a hot day in June only a few days before he graduated! School is good. =]

I can only count down the years until my Moo will be old enough to go off to school. In the meanwhile, I am busy studying up on private schools verus public schools here. I'm even considering home school with a tutor/nanny as well.

I Can think of 5 more!
Just today my baby sister (5 and lonely) came home and actually started naming names
of her new Friends…I'm super happy.
    Socialization years, here we come!

  16. Henria O.

I'm happy that my daughter's going back to school because she's excited about it. She's been looking forward to it for weeks and she's only in her 2nd year of Preschool! I can see her maturity and academic advancement more and more. That pleases me!

  17. angelaakinniyi

Oh no, I'm not too happy! I love the process and the new supplies, but the homework and projects, not at all. It is so busy during the school yr. with deadlines etc… I have three girls and it is tough!

  18. Roxann

I guess I'm in the minority. I love having my kids home and other than them getting interaction with other kids, I would rather they were at home. I am seriously thinking of homeschooling next year.

Thanks for this wonderful article. One more thing to mention is that most digital cameras can come equipped with any zoom lens that enables more or less of a scene to generally be included by means of ‘zooming’ in and out. These changes in the aim length are usually reflected while in the viewfinder and on big display screen on the back of your camera.

Hiya, I am really glad I’ve found this info. Nowadays bloggers publish only about gossip and web stuff and this is really irritating. A good blog with exciting content, that’s what I need. Thanks for making this site, and I will be visiting again. Do you do newsletters? I Can’t find it.

I have observed that in digital cameras, unique devices help to target automatically. The particular sensors regarding some cams change in contrast, while others make use of a beam associated with infra-red (IR) light, specially in low lighting. Higher spec cameras occasionally use a blend of both models and might have Face Priority AF where the digicam can ‘See’ any face while focusing only on that. Many thanks for sharing your thinking on this site.

One more issue is really that video gaming became one of the all-time greatest forms of entertainment for people spanning various ages. Kids have fun with video games, and adults do, too. The actual XBox 360 is just about the favorite gaming systems for people who love to have a lot of video games available to them, along with who like to play live with some others all over the world. Thank you for sharing your opinions.

Thanks for the ideas you have discussed here. Another thing I would like to say is that computer memory requirements generally go up along with other advances in the technology. For instance, as soon as new generations of cpus are made in the market, there’s usually a corresponding increase in the dimensions preferences of all pc memory as well as hard drive room. This is because the software operated by simply these cpus will inevitably rise in power to make new technological know-how.

I have learned result-oriented things by your blog. One other thing I would like to say is the fact newer personal computer os’s are inclined to allow far more memory to be utilized, but they in addition demand more memory space simply to perform. If someone’s computer is unable to handle much more memory as well as newest computer software requires that ram increase, it may be the time to shop for a new Computer system. Thanks
