The COVID-19 pandemic has been a very challenging time to live through in a lot of different ways. All over the world, people were put into lockdowns and worried for their own health and safety along with that of their loved ones. To help deal with all of the stress and isolation, a huge number of people adopted animals - with new pets being welcomed into millions of homes across the globe!

Statistically speaking, about one in five households across the US adopted a new cat or dog since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis. That equates to around 23 million households in total, according to statistics from the ASPCA. Additionally, there are many others who adopted different animals, such as hamsters and rabbits.

We can safely say that millions of people got themselves a new furry friend during this time, and the trend has been seen all over the world. In the UK, the BBC reported that a total of 3.2 million households acquired a new pet. In many other countries across the globe, families, couples, and people living alone decided to add a furry friend to their lives.

How Pets Help You Manage Stress Levels

One of the main reasons why so many people decided to adopt a pet during the pandemic is because they wanted some company. The presence of a furry friend (or non-furry!) can really help you feel happier, more relaxed, and less stressed. In fact, there are many studies that show how pet owners tend to be more positive people with less stress in their day-to-day lives.

Research shows that the presence of a pet can help to reduce the production of cortisol, the stress hormone, while also boosting the production of oxytocin, which helps us feel good. And if you've ever had a pet around the house, you'll know exactly how comforting and heartwarming it can be to see that little face looking up at you, or have a cuddly cat nestle gently on your lap.

Pet owners can also benefit from better heart health and physical health in general, as they tend to get more exercise, such as walking the dog or playing with the cat. So there really are many health benefits to enjoy from having pets, in addition to the fact that they're such great company and so much fun to spend time with.
