How to Pick Where to Travel in 2022 and Why it Matters
Despite the ongoing pandemic, people are still finding ways to travel. After being stuck at home for so long, we’ve all definitely been itching to go somewhere. According to the U.S. Travel Association, travel spending totaled $88 billion dollars as of October 2021 - only a 12% drop below October 2019 levels in comparison.
Whether you’re a seasoned traveler, or simply need a change of scenery after the last 2 years, it's no secret that the travel experience has drastically changed. The entire world is different now and our needs are evolving along with it. So how do you go about finding your next travel destination?
Follow Your Passions to Design the Perfect Trip
In the time before, my trip planning consisted of aggressively Googling top travel destinations for that year by season. Once I had narrowed my list down to 2-3 destinations, I would then scroll through travel accounts and influencer posts on Instagram to see if the general vibe matched what I was looking for. This strategy can still work, but requires more research now for obvious reasons.
Try working backwards. Make a list of things you enjoy and begin your search that way, rather than looking up a specific destination first. You might be surprised what you end up finding.
For example, if you’re a fan of autumn squash and gardening, it might interest you to visit Germany during the late summer for the Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival - which happens to be the world’s largest pumpkin festival! Or, if you’re a hiking enthusiast and want to get your boots dirty beyond the U.S. National Parks, you might want to hit the Inca Trail in Peru. Now if you’re a foodie like me, I would go just for the unlimited ceviche!
Stay Open to Possibilities
Don’t box yourself in! I know we all like to book based on loyalty programs or brands we love, I mean who doesn’t love seeing those points go up? But that doesn’t mean you should forgo a destination because there isn’t a Hilton in town.
Studies show that people are more open to new travel and lodging options now than ever before. This includes trying out different brands from both airlines and hotels.
People are also looking for unconventional destinations, too. Try to explore places you’ve never been before, and don’t be afraid if you don’t know anyone that’s been there either.
If you’re looking for a unique experience, try community lodging. Now I know what you’re thinking, and no it’s not just for college students! Community lodging gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and community, while meeting new people along the way. If you’re curious about what that looks like, check out this show on Netflix called The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals. You’ll surely be inspired!
Check Local Guidelines and Be Safe
You can also begin your destination search by looking up COVID travel guidelines first, and pick a place depending on the requirements you’re able to meet. For example, France has several travel bans in place depending on where you’re coming in from. Certain countries may also require a vaccination status upon entering.
Happy travels, and don't forget to attach a Tile to your luggage and passport!
