Forget “Instagram Official” - Location-Sharing Is the New Hard Launch for Modern Couples
Cupid’s got competition—location-sharing is now the hottest way to make it official. From Gen Z trendsetters to baby boomers going digital—couples are flocking to apps like Life360 to stay connected, safe, and totally in sync. What began as a simple way to check in or ensure a loved one is safe has leveled up into a relationship game-changer, strengthening trust, improving communication, and keeping the spark alive—whether you're across the dinner table or across the country.
So why are couples all in on location-sharing like never before? In this season of love, Life360 surveyed 1,000 adults in all kinds of relationships—whether casually dating, navigating long-distance, committed, married, or anything in between—to uncover how tech is redefining modern love across every generation.
Location-Sharing: The New Love Language
If sharing is caring, location-sharing might just be the ultimate expression of trust in modern relationships. Our survey found that 95% of American adults in relationships use some form of location-sharing tech, and nearly 40% rely on apps like Life360. Couples on Life360 check their app seven times a day on average*—an indicator of how location-sharing is supplementing and in some cases, replacing traditional check-ins. Notably, 12.5 million Life360 users are spouses or partners without children on the app**, showing how location-sharing supports couples at all stages of life. It’s more than convenience—it’s a modern way to stay connected and foster intimacy.
Gone are the days when updating your relationship status online was the ultimate sign of commitment. Today, nearly 60% of recent location-sharers say sharing their whereabouts makes their relationship feel more official. For Gen Z couples, sharing your location is considered an even bigger milestone than posting photos of each other on social media. In fact, 21% say they’d consider it a deal breaker if a potential partner isn’t willing to share their location.
While 89% of couples use location-sharing to support their relationships, motivations differ. Women prioritize their partner’s safety during late nights or solo outings, while men are more likely to use it simply to locate their partner—because apparently, “Where are you?” never gets old. Newly committed couples, meanwhile, lean on location-sharing to coordinate commutes and arrival times. And it’s not just a passing trend—64% of couples plan to make it a permanent part of their relationship.
From checking that your date made it home safely to texting your partner for a latte when they are near Starbucks, location-sharing brings peace of mind, smoother relationships, and a touch of delightful convenience to daily life.
Safety First: The Peace of Mind Factor
Speaking of peace of mind, safety is the #1 reason couples use apps like Life360. 90% of users feel more at ease about their partner’s safety, with 51% relying on location-sharing during bad weather or late nights. Beyond safety, 50% say location-sharing has improved their physical well-being, and 45% credit it with boosting their mental health.
Britnee Karg, a Life360 member from Houston, Texas, shared how location-sharing and the app’s safety features have been a game-changer for her and her husband, Remmi. “When my husband and I first moved in together, he wasn’t familiar with the area. Not long after, I was in a car accident, but before I could even call him, Remmi received an alert from Life360 with my exact location. He arrived at the scene faster than expected—even before the paramedics—to make sure I was okay. We’re so grateful Life360 was there during such a scary moment.”
For couples juggling schedules, jobs, and baby duties, location-sharing can feel like having an extra teammate. 40% of parents with young children said they check when their partner will be home to help with baby duties, and 36% rely on it to coordinate schedules with caretakers.
Stay-at-home mom, Brittney Wesselmann, loves the peace of mind location-sharing brings to her everyday life. “My fiancé and I live in Humbolt, Iowa, with our 10-week-old son. Trevor drives for FedEx, and since their trucks don’t have crash detection, we use Life360 for added safety. It gives me peace of mind to see where he’s driving, how fast he’s going, and how long he’s stopped at delivery locations. It was also super helpful to know when Trevor was heading home when I was pregnant—if I saw him close to my favorite fast food restaurant, I’d ask him to grab my favorite meal to help fix my pregnancy cravings!”
Long-Distance? No Problem! Trust Makes the Distance Disappear
As expected, couples who share their location report higher trust, fewer arguments, and stronger connections. 74% feel more connected to their partner, and 79% find peace of mind during a partner’s night out. 3 in 4 couples say it’s increased trust, while 56% say it’s helped them avoid arguments altogether. Surprisingly, cheating concerns don’t top the list of reasons for using location-sharing. Instead, 53% call it “the secret to keeping our relationship strong.”
Long-distance relationships also thrive with real-time location updates. 74% of couples say it helps them stay connected, 66% feel closer to their partner, and 62% say it makes them feel more involved in each other’s lives. For many, it’s about more than checking in—location-sharing strengthens bonds in ways calls or texts can’t. 54% of long-distance couples say it’s key to making it work, and 34% admit their relationship might not have survived without it!
Riel Harrison, a recent college graduate from Lake Wylie, South Carolina, has been in a long-distance relationship with her boyfriend for 7 months. “Steven lives in Mobile, Alabama, so we’re a 2-hour flight or 10+ hour drive apart. We started location-sharing right away, and I love how it helps me stay involved in his life and avoid little misunderstandings. If I haven’t heard from him, I can check if he’s at work, out with friends, or home asleep—it puts my mind at ease. I also love tracking Steven’s drive and seeing him get closer and closer when he’s on his way to visit, and he loves getting a landing notification when I fly to Mobile.”
Making Life Easier, One Ping at a Time
Location-sharing isn’t just about safety—it’s about making life simpler and more connected. 68% of users say the technology improves convenience and coordination. Whether it’s knowing exactly when to start dinner because you can see how far your partner is from home, or avoiding unnecessary calls or texts by checking their ETA during errands, location-sharing helps couples navigate their busy lives with ease.
As an experienced insurance adjuster frequently on the road, Scott Ptak appreciates the convenience of location-sharing. “I cover a large territory, often driving in harsh weather throughout the midwest, which used to worry my partner, Chery, leading to multiple phone calls. After our niece suggested Life360, it’s been a game-changer for convenience. Cheryl can check my location for peace of mind, and I can focus on driving. Whenever she’s out, it’s also handy to know when she’s heading home, so I can time dinner perfectly.”
The Future of Love, Tech-Style
In today’s fast-paced world, location-sharing isn’t just about knowing where someone is—it’s about staying connected, showing you care, and building trust in ways that feel effortless. Modern couples are proving that a little tech can go a long way in keeping love strong. So, whether you're a newly committed Gen Z duo, millennials balancing love and family, or a Gen X couple enjoying your second act, location-sharing is more than a trend—it’s the ultimate relationship hack.
