Tile Joins Amazon Sidewalk to Make it Easier to Find Your Things

In this article, Jossie Haines describes how she created the Tile Mentorship program, including prep, training, and measuring success.

Mentoring is a topic I’m very passionate about, and believe it can enable women and underrepresented minorities to get access to opportunities they may not have access to. I launched the Tile Mentorship Program in December 2018, and we’ve had 3 successful rounds of mentoring since then. More than 65% of the company participated as either a mentor or mentee and greater than 90% executive team participated as a mentor every round. At Tile, I’ve seen mentoring empower my colleagues to switch roles within the company and allow them to learn about aspects of the business they may not have day-to-day access to and help newly promoted managers gain the skills needed to succeed in their new role. <h2>Launching a Mentoring Program</h2>In this article, I will share the steps and resources we used to run our mentoring program at Tile. One of my goals was to define a mentoring program process that I could pass on to someone else at Tile to run the actual coordination as well as have something I could share with others looking to start their own mentoring programs at their companies, so they wouldn’t have to start from scratch. I wanted a program that would provide real value to our employees and enable them with experiences and opportunities they may not get elsewhere, be easy to manage (especially since this is my side passion and not my main role), and finally, I needed it to be free as I had no budget :) The first step to launching a successful mentoring program is getting leadership buy-in. At Tile, I had a lot of support and enthusiasm from both Lissa, our VP of People, and CJ, our CEO. This empowered me to ask the executive and leadership teams to commit to participating as mentors to ensure the success of the program. In true Tile culture, the leadership team heartily agreed to participate and I feel this has been one of the biggest reasons our mentorship program has been so successful. After a lot of research into different mentoring programs and options, I focused my efforts around a few main key areas to build a successful mentoring program: - Having a well-defined timeline and process for a mentoring cycle  - Enabling matches that most effectively empowered all the employees desiring mentoring -    Ensuring proper training for both the mentor and the mentee to enable a successful mentoring relationship. Below I will share why I focused on each of these areas and cover the overall Tile mentoring process. <h2>Timeline and Process for Mentoring </h2>As an engineering manager, I’m a bit of a process nerd and wanted to ensure I had a well-defined process and structure for running mentoring. One of the first decisions I made when setting up the mentoring program was whether people would be able to join at any time, or if there would be fixed times throughout the year when we would allow mentoring pairs to get created. I decided to opt for the latter as it would make the overall process easier to manage if everyone was going through the same process concurrently. I opted for a 3-month mentoring cycle with about 1 month of planning/ prep before the actual mentoring relationships.  During the planning month, we take care of all the preliminary activities needed for a successful mentoring program. We kick off the program by announcing the mentoring program during the company&#39;s all-hands and give a quick overview in case we have any new hires.  Afterward, we will send out the mentoring planning survey. We ask our employees if they’d like to be mentees, mentors, or both, and the focus areas they would like to develop as a mentee or teach as a mentor. We give the company about a week to fill out the survey, sending a few loving reminders along the way. <h2>Mentor/Mentee Matchmaking  </h2>After all the surveys have been completed, the mentoring matchmaking system takes place. I make it sound fancy, but it’s just a Google spreadsheet with the results from the survey and a new tab where we compile the mentoring pairs. The mentoring committee goes through each employee who desires mentorship and tries to pair the individual up with the most appropriate mentor. Here is where I can really make sure we are empowering our female and other underrepresented employees. I ensure that they get access to the mentors they would like to get paired with to help them grow in their careers. Sometimes this requires contacting team members who may not have signed up for mentoring but may be eager once they’ve been asked. My goal is to give everyone who asks for a mentor the opportunity to meet with someone else at Tile to help them achieve their goals. Once we’ve decided on the mentoring pairs, we send out an email congratulating the pair and inviting them to attend our mentoring training session. <h2>Mentorship Training </h2>Having training for both the mentors and the mentees is one of the most important steps for having a successful mentoring program. It is essential to cover:  - What is mentoring (and what it’s not) - The specific roles and responsibilities of the mentor and the mentee  - The timeline for mentoring -   What to cover in the first mentoring session -   Suggestions and topics for future sessions -   Topics that need to be disclosed to HR if brought up during mentoring.  During the first session, I have the mentoring pairs fill out a mentorship agreement form which sets the stage for the rest of the mentoring relationship. It’s supposed to be a living document, but it starts on the first session by setting a commitment to meet x times during the mentoring cycle (our recommendation is at least 6 times), setting which topics are off-limits, figuring out what are the goals to be accomplished, and starting to break down what are the action items to accomplish along the way to meet those goals. This sets the groundwork for a foundation of being able to be truthful and vulnerable with each other in the mentoring pair as the mentoring content is all confidential within the pair.  I also like to do an exercise in active listening and really get people used to the practice of listening to someone else. It&#39;s easy to start formulating a response to something someone is saying midway through their statement, but then you may soon realize you didn’t actually hear the second half of what they said. Here’s an exercise to try as a pair. Have one person tell a story about themselves for one minute. The other person’s job is to just listen as carefully as possible. At the end of the minute, the listener repeats back to the storyteller what they remember. The storyteller shares what was correct, what was missed, and what was incorrect in the listener’s retelling of the story. The two people then switch roles, and the storyteller is now the listener and vice versa. It’s a fascinating exercise to see how well you can do this, and who the best listeners in your team are. <h2>Analysis of Mentoring </h2>At this point, your mentors and mentees should feel confident to start their mentoring relationships. I like sending out checking emails during the 3 months to provide encouragement, tips, and suggestions, as well as taking surveys. I definitely believe that which isn’t measured can’t be truly improved, and the same goes for mentoring. It’s important to set goals upfront when getting buy-in for your mentoring program and track them throughout. I suggest doing a survey of your training session, a mid-point survey to see if there is any course-correcting that needs to happen, and an end of mentoring survey to see how the round of mentoring went. The goals you set will be specific to your company and your current culture, but I like to measure the impact of mentoring on retention and empowering our team members to thrive. <h2>End of Mentoring Celebration </h2>At the end of the 3-month cycle, I like to close our journey with a celebration and retrospective of our mentoring program. I ask everyone who feels comfortable to share their successes and learnings along the way, as well as provide any feedback they have on the process overall. It’s honestly great hearing about the different learning journeys my colleagues were on and how we could help each other get better. What’s New for Smart AlertsSmart Alerts have gotten smarter. These intuitive alerts make sure you don’t leave anything behind, no matter where you are or where you go. With the relaunched Smart Alerts, if you visit a place and stay a while, we’ll check to make sure you leave that location with all of the Tiled items your first arrived with. For example, if you go to the grocery store with your Tiles key and wallet, but then leave the store twenty minutes later with only your Tiled keys, we’ll proactively alert you that you no longer have your wallet.    Before this revamp, Tile users needed to set up a Smart Alert in the app for each Tile in their account and specify a particular place where they wouldn&#39;t want to leave it. This made Smart Alerts useful for keeping track of important things at trusted places like at home or at work, but it didn’t solve for the everyday places we won’t take the time to set up, like the gym, a restaurant, or a friend’s house. And since we rely on having our essentials with us wherever we go, an update like this one was imminent.   The Smart Alert MissionFrom the beginning, our team set out to tackle a difficult challenge: to create a left-behind alert that&#39;s always there when you need it—and stays quiet when you don&#39;t. Alerts needed to be timely and helpful, not spammy or overwhelming. So, in order to provide the best possible customer experience, we created Smart Alerts to be completely customizable.

Tile users can activate Anti-Theft Mode on any of their current Tile trackers, including Tile-enabled partner products.

Tile users can activate Anti-Theft Mode on any of their current Tile trackers, including Tile-enabled partner products.<h2>Why are we doing this?</h2>We noticed this gap in the Bluetooth finding category’s ability to address theft—which we know is one of the many reasons people use our products. With increasing <a href='https://counciloncj.org/mid-year-2022-crime-trends/' target='_blank' title='Åpnes i en ny fane'>theft and robbery rates</a> and <a href='https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-12-20/economists-place-70-chance-for-us-recession-in-2023?sref=5yAAc4IK' target='_blank' title='Åpnes i en ny fane'>economic uncertainty</a> on the horizon, we knew the time was right to introduce Anti-Theft Mode.As they are currently configured, Bluetooth trackers, including Tile and AirTags, can unwittingly notify criminals of the presence of a Bluetooth tracker on or in stolen items, enabling them to find the trackers and discard them to evade prosecution. Other Bluetooth trackers on the market even proactively notify nearby smartphone users when an unknown Bluetooth tracker is traveling with them and offer precision finding to locate it.In addition to not issuing these proactive notifications, our Anti-Theft solution empowers users with the choice to make their devices invisible to Scan and Secure so that criminals will not be able to misuse this feature to locate and disable Tile devices after stealing valuables. <h2>Why does it matter to members?</h2>We developed Anti-Theft Mode to give members peace of mind and assurance that Tile is doing everything possible to keep valuables safe. We also know that families don’t have time to misplace their items and certainly don’t have the time or money to replace belongings when they get stolen. We’re giving users a solution that offers them the choice to live more relaxed lives by increasing the likelihood of recovering stolen items.Additionally, we are aware of how Bluetooth trackers are being misused in terms of stalking. That’s why we have implemented strict safety measures to ensure the Anti-Theft Mode is used only as it’s intended—to make stealing things harder. Our progressive safety measures include:<ol><li>Requiring a multi-factor ID verification process when activating Anti-Theft Mode to deter the feature from being used for nefarious purposes, such as stalking.  </li><li>An acknowledgment from Anti-Theft Mode users that personal information can and will be shared with law enforcement at our discretion, even without a subpoena, to aid in the investigation and prosecution of suspected stalking.</li><li>A $1 million fine for any individual convicted in a court of law for using Tile devices to illegally track any individual without their knowledge or consent. </li></ol>Our number one priority is keeping our members and their valuables safe. That’s why we’re offering our members the option to protect their valuables with Anti-Theft Mode while also  implementing all of the safeguards we can at the product level, ensuring our products are being used as they were intended.<h2>The future. </h2>We’re excited and optimistic about our solution to help members protect their valuables from theft and prevent the use of our products for stalking. However, we know that these safeguards are not enough to put an end to the stalking problem altogether. Not only do the existing anti-stalking solutions in the industry eliminate anti-theft functionality, they also put the responsibility of preventing stalking entirely on the victim. To fix the stalking problem at scale while also keeping Bluetooth trackers effective for the use cases that matter most to users, we must make industry-wide changes, like:<ul><li>Requiring all location-enabled devices that are small enough to be planted on a person to be registered using a real name to remove the ability for these devices to be used anonymously, giving law enforcement the information they need to pursue justice for victims.</li><li>Banning all devices that are specifically marketed for the secret tracking of people.</li><li>Making stalking a first-time felony offense (currently, fewer than <a href='https://www.stalkingawareness.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/SPARC_StalkngFactSheet_2018_FINAL.pdf' target='_blank' title='Åpnes i en ny fane'>one-third of states</a> classify stalking as a felony in all circumstances).</li></ul>We know that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution to this problem. However, we hope that Anti-Theft Mode is a catalyst for the industry to make changes that deter theft and stalking and improve the overall safety of consumers.

To Life360’s team, our investors, and whoever else has been following our journey, With the full support of the board, I’m excited to announce that after nearly 20 years of leading Life360, I’m promoting Lauren Antonoff to CEO and taking on the role of full-time Executive Chairman. <img src='https://images.ctfassets.net/nywvtjnh7p05/4NW3JmwD5jGphO5aqY25US/0614d8cc5874a9ba4141b97fbf63ecd0/chris-lauren-blog-image.jpg' alt='chris-lauren-blog-image' title='chris-lauren-blog-image' /><table><tr><td></td><td>(Lauren and me, this Sunday at my house, with our dogs, testing out the new pet trackers.)</td><td></td></tr></table>This was a challenging note to write. Moments like this come with a lot of pressure to sanitize the message and speak only in superlatives, but my brain isn’t wired that way. I disdain corporate speak and owe more than the standard <q>I want to spend more time with my family and Lauren is a great visionary product-centric strategic operator.</q> (I do, however, want to spend more time with my family, and Lauren is, in fact, a great visionary product-centric strategic operator.) I’ve never overhyped or played into the Silicon Valley kool-aid-drinking tech bro stereotypes. That’s probably why I never made a <q>30 Under 30</q> list… and also why I avoided the often corresponding securities fraud. Comms wrote me a draft. Legal wanted to chime in too. A lot of people had advice on what to say. But I ignored it and decided to share my own thoughts without talking points or filters, in this single message to anyone who wants to read it. When I turned 40 two years ago, I told the board I planned to transition as CEO before I turned 45. I also publicly shared that I expected to have another chapter at some point. So this shift isn’t sudden; it’s something I’ve been very intentional about. And I made it clear this would only happen when the company, the team, and I were all ready. This day has come, sooner than expected, because I’m confident Lauren is ready to take my place. The results she’s driven over the last year make that clear. Under her leadership, we’ve brought in exceptional new talent and leveled up the team we already had. Our organization is stronger than it’s ever been at every layer. We’re moving faster while maintaining quality. Marketing is on fire. International is taking off. Our brand has never been stronger. And we’re becoming highly profitable. On the topic of team, it’s a truism that nothing is more important than your people. Rather than call out a few and miss many, I’ll highlight the areas where our team has made parts of me obsolete. I no longer have to stay up at night worrying about location bugs, you’re ahead of me. I don’t need to be the one pushing us to lean into danger—look at how bold our new marketing campaigns have been. I don’t have to challenge systems and processes constantly—we now have people who bring real balance to the table. I don’t have to call BS on low-quality work—craftsmanship is getting elevated every day. I don’t have to stress about standards or hard decisions—we’re aligned on building a world-class team, and we’re doing it. So if things are going so well, why don’t I just stay CEO? I’ve always had a tendency to share the complete picture, not just the highlights. That probably cost me at times, especially in fundraising, but over the long run, it’s built credibility. People know I mean what I say. The honest truth is that my brute force style got results and still can, but being the backstop of last resort, 24/7, year after year, comes with a constant weight. After nearly two decades of being the last line of defense, I feel it more than I used to. There are parts of the CEO role I love that fuel me, and parts that drain me. When I’m running on empty, everything suffers. This move lets me focus on the work that plays to my strengths and delivers the highest impact for the company. But the CEO role needs someone who is all in on every aspect of it, every single day, and that’s Lauren. She leads in a way that brings out the best in people. She knows how to hire exceptionally well, set a high bar, and use process without overdoing it. When it comes to our users and long-term vision, we’re completely aligned — but in other ways, we’re polar opposites. The challenges that wear me down at this scale are exactly the ones that fire her up. She’s fresh, relentless, and loves the work. I can call her at midnight to talk Life360, and she’s not just available, she’s energized. We also click in a way that makes product work a joy. I’ve always had that with my co-founder Alex, and now I have it with Lauren too. In many ways, she’s a spiritual late-stage co-founder. We spar, challenge each other, and sharpen ideas, and we have a lot of fun doing it. Some of our biggest wins over the past year have come out of these sessions, often from initiatives she’s brought to the table. She’s not just a COO who executes my vision; she’s a creative force in her own right. I hope one day we can be like Jeff Weiner and Reid Hoffman at LinkedIn, one of those leadership duos people point to as a model for how to scale and evolve a company. Much of what’s launched this year, and what’s still to come, has her fingerprints all over it. By moving to Executive Chairman, I’m focusing on the parts of the job that give me the most energy and impact: strategy, high-stakes projects, product deep-dives, and key relationships. Over the past year, we’ve essentially tested this setup — Lauren took on more CEO responsibilities while I stepped back from daily operations and leaned into an outward-facing role — and the results speak for themselves. And, because this transition has in many ways already happened, most people on the team won’t notice much of a change, if at all. After nearly two decades here, I’ve seen almost every idea before, along with the mistakes we made trying them. My job now is to make sure we learn from that history and keep everything tied to the bigger arc of where we’re going, all while staying true to our Member Bill of Rights. Thinking multiple steps ahead is what I do best, and Lauren and I are fully aligned on where we’re headed. If she ever needs a pit-fighter, I’ll be here to tussle — whether that’s taking on patent trolls, bottom-feeding class action lawyers, causing trouble on TikTok, or injecting a little crazy in a way only a founder can. I’d give myself 9.5/10 for vision and 2/10 for execution. Half the initiatives we’re planning for next year were already in that old document. They just took 10x the time and 100x the money compared to what I expected as a then-naive entrepreneur. Better late than never! Life360 has been my life’s work, and that’s not changing. This move simply formalizes what’s already true: I’m shifting into a role that reflects where I am now and lets me keep contributing in a meaningful, sustainable way. With that, I’m excited to officially welcome our new CEO, Lauren Antonoff, as the leader for this next chapter. She’s already made a huge impact, and I have full confidence in where she’ll take us next. I’ll be right alongside her, continuing to push the vision forward. As economic anxiety rises, Americans are cutting back—but not on everything. A new national survey by Life360 reveals how people are reprioritizing in what we call the Anxiety Economy.

Amid inflation, tariffs, and concerns about AI-driven job loss, consumers are feeling increasingly uneasy about their financial future. To better understand how Americans are responding, Life360 conducted a national survey of 1,000 U.S. adults to explore current economic sentiment and spending decisions. The results show a clear emotional undercurrent: 71% of Americans feel economically vulnerable, and two-thirds describe the economy as <q>uncertain.</q> That unease is growing; 64% say their anxiety has increased since the start of the year.  While 65% report cutting back on spending, the bigger shift is in how people are choosing to spend. Many are moving their money toward comfort and peace of mind, redefining what counts as essential in today’s economic climate. <img src='https://images.ctfassets.net/nywvtjnh7p05/4JxE4NtwbzWiNnbI7VXlRD/7ae8843adb3134986e2c50f33d4d3e1e/Asset_2.jpg' alt='Asset 2' title='Asset 2' /> What is the Anxiety Economy?  The findings point to an emerging trend described as the Anxiety Economy, a shift where people are making emotionally driven trade-offs and holding onto the tools that help them feel safer, more in control, and less anxious. <q>Uncertainty is quickly emerging as the economy’s buzzword for 2025,</q> says Life360 economist Aaron Terrazas. <q>Over one in three Americans report that they have experienced uncertainty or difficulty at work recently – a figure that is even higher among younger Americans. In moments of elevated economic uncertainty, the premium on security increases: Investors seek safe assets, businesses prioritize safe investments, and families double down on peace of mind. The Anxiety Economy surges during these historical moments when risks are elevated and the future feels cloudy. As economy-watchers have seen repeatedly over the past few years, shifting vibes take on a life of their own – and have very real downstream consequences for where households spend and how businesses invest.</q>  The New Spending Hierarchy When asked to evaluate nine everyday expense categories, consumers said they’re most likely to cut back on dining out, online shopping, travel, and tech gadgets, with streaming services not far behind. But one category stood out: safety and security services, including features like emergency alerts for loved ones, home security notifications, and digital threat protections. It was the only expense where people were more likely to say they’re investing more (21%) than cutting back (20%). That puts safety ahead of categories like education and even fitness and wellness subscriptions when it comes to what people are protecting. When asked to rank their spending priorities after covering essentials like food and housing, Gen Z and Millennials consistently placed safety and security at the top, while Gen X and Baby Boomers prioritized health and wellness instead. <q>Research shows that our formative economic experiences shape our long-term attitudes toward risk and uncertainty,</q> said Terrazas. <q>The long echoes of pandemic-era uncertainty are clear in generational divides when it comes to what people prioritize in an uncertain world.</q> In short, younger generations aren’t just tech-native — they’re anxiety-native, and their spending reflects it. Consumers Rethink Their Subscriptions  Apps and subscription services are among the most popular discretionary spending categories, with 94% of Americans paying for at least one. The average monthly spend on apps sits around $73 for individuals and $96 for parents. However, those surveyed also expressed a desire to cut their app subscription budget by at least 23% (for individuals) and 31% (for parents). Customers ranked streaming services like Netflix and Hulu as the subscriptions they’re least likely to cut, along with apps that provide safety or peace of mind. <ul><li>82% are willing to pay more for products that provide peace of mind</li><li>88% say knowing their family is safe improves their well-being</li></ul>When asked how they’d spend an extra $100 in their tech budget, the average American would put roughly 20% toward safety and security apps. In short, safety is leading the pack, but there’s a broader shift toward tech that supports well-being, everyday functionality, and connection. Parents Are Doubling Down on Peace of Mind The research shows this shift is even more pronounced among parents. From juggling pickups and work meetings to keeping tabs on teen drivers or aging relatives, today’s families are navigating more stress, and they’re turning to safety tech to stay sane.<ul><li>85% of parents are interested in spending more on technology that makes their family safer</li><li>Families with school-aged kids (ages 6-10) are spending the most on safety features and services</li><li>And parents are leading the adoption of key tools like crash detection, roadside assistance, and location sharing</li></ul>These aren’t fringe behaviors. DKC Analytics conducted and analyzed this survey with a sample procured using the Pollfish survey delivery platform, which delivers online surveys globally through mobile apps and the mobile web, along with the desktop web. No post-stratification has been applied to the results.
