Life360 Crash Detection Real Stories M

Summary

What this article covers:
A clear explanation of how Life360 Crash Detection works, what happens after a collision is detected, which plans include emergency dispatch, and how to make sure your family is fully covered.

Who it’s for

  • Parents of teen drivers who want a safety net behind the wheel

  • Families who want automatic alerts if someone is in a car accident

  • Anyone setting up Life360 and wondering what crash detection actually does

  • People deciding between Life360 plan tiers

Key Takeaways

  • Life360 Crash Detection uses motion sensors in your phone to detect collisions over 25 mph.

  • When a crash is detected, the app prompts the user to confirm they're okay and contacts emergency services if there's no response.

  • Emergency dispatch (sending actual help) is available on Gold and Platinum plans.

  • All plans include Crash Detection alerts to your Circle members.

  • Permissions aren't one-size-fits-all. On Android, crash detection needs motion permissions enabled. On iOS, location set to Always does the heavy lifting. Get it right and Life360 works the way it should.

No parent wants to get a call that there's been an accident. The call from an unknown number is scary enough. Life360 makes sure you're already in the loop before it comes. When the worst happens, you want to know immediately. And you want help already on the way.

That's exactly what Life360 Crash Detection is built for.

How Life360 Crash Detection Works

Life360 uses the motion sensors in your phone to detect driving events, including sudden deceleration and high-impact collisions. When those sensors pick up a car crash, the app kicks into action immediately.

On a free plan, Life360 alerts you first—and if you don't respond, notifies your Circle so they can see your exact location and check on you. On a paid plan, you get a real phone call. Because some moments need more than a notification. And with a Gold or Platinum membership, if you still don't respond, Life360 contacts emergency services and dispatches help directly to your location.

One thing to keep in mind: crash detection works based on your phone's movement and speed patterns, so keeping it on your person (not buried in a bag or left on a seat) helps it do its job.

What Happens With Your Emergency Contacts

When a crash is detected, Life360 sends you a notification to check if you're okay. If you don't respond, your Circle gets notified too. Free members receive SMS and push notifications. On a paid plan, Life360 takes it a step further with a direct phone call.

Life360 will contact Emergency Dispatch and dispatch emergency responders when:

  • A collision is detected, and the affected user doesn't respond to Life360’s check-in notification

To make sure the right people are notified, you can go into your app settings and confirm your emergency contacts are up to date. It takes two minutes and is worth doing today.

Crash Detection vs. Emergency Dispatch: What Each Plan Covers

This is where it gets important to understand the difference, because not all crash detection is the same.

Crash alerts are included on all Life360 plans, including the free tier. When crash detection technology identifies a collision, your Circle gets notified and can see your exact location.

Emergency dispatch is when Life360 actually calls for help and sends emergency services to the scene. This requires a Gold or Platinum membership, and turns a notification into a real, active response. Life360 detects over 2,000 collisions every day—and for Gold and Platinum members, that detection triggers real help dispatched to the scene.

If you have a teen driver or anyone in your family who drives regularly, Gold may be worth it for the dispatch feature alone.

Knowing isn't enough. Getting help there is.

Crash alerts go to your Circle on every plan — free included. Emergency dispatch, where Life360 actually calls 911 and sends help, requires Gold or Platinum. For teen drivers, that's the one that matters.

How to Enable Crash Detection for Your Whole Family

Getting Crash Detection set up for every family member is straightforward, but a few things need to be in place for it to work properly.

On iOS, Life360 needs location permissions set to Always Allow and motion and fitness access enabled. On Android, the permissions are similar. Location access needs to be on at all times to ensure your driving safety, not just when the app is open. Battery optimization settings are a common culprit when crash detection doesn't fire correctly. If your phone is set to aggressively limit background app activity, it can prevent Life360 from detecting driving events. Go into your phone's battery settings and make sure Life360 is excluded from any power-saving restrictions.

A few other things that help:

  • Make sure every family member is added to your Circle

  • Keep the Life360 app updated. Older versions may have detection limitations

  • Check that Drive Detection is turned on in your app settings

If you want to verify everything is working before an accident, you can review your drive history in the app to confirm Life360 is recording trips accurately.

What to Do If Crash Detection Isn't Working

Sometimes Crash Detection misses an event — and most of the time, that comes down to the technology not detecting it. It's not perfect, and we're always working to improve it. That said, settings and signal can make things worse. Battery optimization is a common culprit — if your phone is throttling background activity, Life360 can't do its job. A weak data connection can also affect how quickly detection registers and alerts go out.

False positives can happen, too, usually from sudden stops or jarring movements that the motion sensors read as a collision. If you get a crash alert and everyone is fine, confirm you're okay in the app right away. That stops the escalation process.

Think crash detection isn't working on your phone? Start with these steps:

  1. Check that location permissions are set to Always

  2. Disable battery optimization for Life360 specifically

  3. Update the app to the latest version

  4. Restart your phone

Real Families, Real Crashes

The feature descriptions only tell part of the story. Here's what Crash Detection actually looks like when it matters most.

Sisters sending help

One of our members got the alert when her sister was in a serious car accident in another state. She was hours away and couldn't do anything physically, but because of Life360, she knew exactly where the crash happened, and that help was already on the way. She didn't have to sit there not knowing. The relief I felt knowing that Life360 was sending help in the event my sister hadn't been able to was absolutely massive, she wrote. We will forever be Life360 members.

A son saved by his Circle

One parent described the night her son crashed into a tree after hitting black ice on a quiet country road. He was alone on a road that didn't see much traffic. Life360 sent the alert the moment it happened, and his family rushed to the scene. His friends showed up too, because they were all in the same Circle. The neurosurgeon later told the family that if he'd been left at the scene any longer, the outcome would have been very different. He survived. His mom put it simply: I will never be able to say thank you enough.

The daughter who protected her mother from a distance

And then there's the daughter who was five hours away when her mom was in a crash. Life360 alerted her the second it happened. She had time to call family members, coordinate who could get there fastest, and check on her siblings, all before emergency services had even finished at the scene. It took the fear of the unknown away, she said.

Emergencies happen, and there's no way to know when they will, but with Life360, you have a lifeline during the unthinkable.

Set it up before you need it.

Crash Detection is already in the Life360 app. Take two minutes to make sure it's on for everyone in your Circle — because the time to do it is definitely not after an accident..

The Peace of Mind Is the Point

Here's the thing about Crash Detection: you set it up and then hopefully, you never need it. It's there in the background while your daughter drives to school, while your son heads home from practice late, and while your partner commutes in weather that makes you nervous.

If something does happen, you're not waiting around helplessly. You know the exact location, help is already being dispatched, and your family gets to respond instead of just react.

That's what Life360 is built around: providing a safety net that lets you breathe a little easier every time someone pulls out of the driveway.

Enable Crash Detection for your whole family in the Life360 app, and upgrade to Gold or Platinum to add emergency dispatch today. Some things really shouldn't wait.
