The Runaway Report: Americans Are Canceling Fourth Of July Plans To Tend To Panicked Pets

The Runaway Report M

New Data on the State of the Escape as Pet Parents Prep for the Country’s

Longest and Loudest Independence Day Celebrations

For the millions of pet parents across the US, it’s no surprise that the Fourth of July holiday is a cause for both celebration and concern.

While holiday travel or even small home gatherings can be enough to stress some dogs out, the addition of bright flashes and loud bangs can trigger an anxiety spike in over 75% of dogs in the US, which, aside from being heartbreaking to witness, can cause dangerous reactions. Over one in five dogs (22%) have bolted or attempted to escape their homes due to stress on the Fourth of July.

To help pet parents prepare for arguably the most stressful day for American pets, Life360's first-ever Runaway Report reveals important insights to keep in mind and tips for creating a calming atmosphere amid the celebrations.

The State of the Escape

To better understand the patterns among runaway pets, Life360 analyzed internal data from over 6 million pet profiles added to the app, its Pet GPS tracking devices, and its community-based Pet Finder Network leveraging the app’s 100 million monthly active users, against qualitative insights from 1,000 surveyed US dog parents.

The family connection and safety app’s analysis found that a quarter (26%) of runaway pets are actually repeat escapees, meaning that for a significant portion of dogs, one escape attempt is rarely the last. Interestingly, middle-child dogs (those neither the youngest nor the oldest in a household) have a 48% higher likelihood of running away.

Runaway Report Top Breeds and Cities

Sprawling metros like Los Angeles, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Atlanta, and Chicago top the list for cities with the most escape artists, Still, the witching hour for making a run for it is almost universal, with the most runaways occurring between 3 and 6 PM (local time).

And who’s most likely to make a run for it? Dobermans, Huskies, Chihuahuas, and Pitbulls trigger the most Lost Pet Alerts on Life360, while Retrievers, Pomeranians, Border Collies, and Boxers trigger the least.

Fireworks Spark Fears on Both Ends of the Leash

Nearly half of surveyed pet parents worry their dog could run away during fireworks-heavy holidays, and another 50% report heightened anxiety leading up to loud celebrations. That concern isn't unfounded. If their dog were to go missing during a chaotic event, 65% say they would be highly stressed, including 35% who admit they would go straight into panic mode. Yet only 37% are very confident they could effectively recall their dog if they escaped during fireworks.

Life360 member Ashley Jordan knows that fear firsthand.

Living in a rural area surrounded by woods and open land, we've relied on Life360’s Pet GPS tracker more than once to quickly locate our dog on the map. She’s been known to bolt when startled by loud noises. It even once found our cat after her tracker's battery had run out {and switched to Bluetooth mode]. The biggest benefit is knowing that if something happens, we're not left guessing where our pets are. It's a simple tool that can take away a lot of stress and has given our family incredible peace of mind.

The New Holiday Tradition: Staying In for the Dog

For many pet parents, holiday plans are no longer built around the barbecue, parade, or fireworks shows–they're built around the dog. As pet-focused fireworks anxiety has grown, a quiet shift is underway in how Americans celebrate the Fourth. Over half (51%) of pet parents now choose to spend the evening at home with their dogs, suggesting that traditional gatherings may be shifting earlier. In fact, over 40% of pet parents say they've skipped a holiday gathering or event to prioritize their pet's safety and comfort, and one in five of that group has done so multiple times.

Life360’s recent Pet Parenthood Report found that more Americans are making lifestyle decisions around their pets, from how they spend their time to how they celebrate major milestones. In fact, the constant company of modern pets is driving a new kind of codependency: Reverse Separation Anxiety. The report found that pet owners check on their animals in the app slightly more often than their human children (a median of 15 times per month versus 13, respectively). Fireworks season may be one of the clearest examples yet of just how far people will go to keep their furry family members safe.

Preparedness Tips for Panicked Pets on the Fourth

To help pet parents prepare for the country's biggest and loudest Fourth of July celebrations yet, Life360 partnered with The Puppy Academy. The expert trainers have gained popularity on social media for helping thousands of parents through puppyhood with online and in-person support from their Hermosa Beach, CA facility. Bethany Wilson, the company’s Program Director and Master Trainer, shared her top tips for reducing stress, preventing runaway situations, and helping dogs feel safe when fireworks flood the night sky.

  • Practice Before the Holiday Arrives

One of the best ways to prepare a dog for fireworks is through gradual exposure. Wilson recommends practicing a familiar training routine while playing firework sounds at a very low volume in the background, then slowly increasing the intensity over time. The goal is to help dogs build confidence and familiarity with the sounds before the real celebrations begin.

  • Redirect Early Signs of Stress

When dogs hear fireworks, their first reaction is often heightened alertness. From there, many begin pacing, barking, whining, or looking for a place to hide. Wilson recommends intervening early with simple redirection techniques, whether that's asking for a known behavior, tossing treats for a scavenger game, or engaging your dog in a familiar activity that shifts their focus away from the noise.

  • Create a Safe Space and Keep Them Close

During fireworks displays, keep dogs in their most comfortable area of the home and avoid giving them opportunities to slip away unnoticed. For some dogs, that may be a crate. For others, it's a favorite couch or room. For dogs prone to panic, Wilson recommends keeping them on a leash indoors while they're being supervised to help prevent them from darting off and hiding if they're startled.

  • Help Them Decompress After the Noise Ends

The stress doesn't always disappear when the fireworks stop. After the celebrations wind down, Wilson recommends a short training session, a favorite toy, or even a calm massage to help dogs refocus and settle back into a relaxed state.

A Digital Safety Net for Added Peace of Mind

Prevention is paramount, but when a dog does run, every minute counts. That's where family tech tools are changing the equation. GPS tracking ranked as the number one reunification tool among survey respondents, with more than 90% expressing confidence in it, and 54% saying a GPS tracker is the tool they'd trust most if their dog ran away.

Life360's internal data shows it takes an average of around 37 minutes for a lost pet to reunite with its owner when wearing a  Life360 Pet GPS tracker. That kind of speed can mean the difference between a scare and a tragedy.

Designed for both urban and rural pets, Life360 Pet GPS combines cellular, GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth technology to provide real-time location updates alongside other family members and valuables on the Life360 map. It’s also backed by Life360's community-powered Pet Finder Network of over 100 million members, helping families locate lost pets faster when every minute matters.

Survey Methodology:

This sample of 1000 US adults (aged 18 to 65) was surveyed on May 27, 2026. Sampling was calibrated to align with US pet ownership demographics. All respondents are currently the owners of at least one dog, confirmed by both consumer-matched data and respondent self-confirmation. DKC Analytics conducted and analyzed this survey with a sample procured using the Pollfish survey delivery platform, which delivers online surveys globally through mobile apps and the mobile web, along with the desktop web. No post-stratification has been applied to the results.

Life360 Data Methodology:

Following the launch of its pet safety products, including a community-based Pet Finder Network and wearable Pet GPS tracker, Life360 conducted a comprehensive analysis of the over 6 million Pet Profiles added to family circles on the app.
